Is it reasonable for Destination Gotland
to make a profit?

Destination Gotland is a private company, which means we should make a profit, just like other companies.

We are part of Gotlandsbolaget, which has roughly 4,000 shareholders (most from Gotland). And, like all private companies, we need to make a profit to be sustainable and resilient.

At the same time, it is an operation with high costs. We have ongoing expenses to maintain the ships, to berth at ports, terminal fees, fuel, and above all we pay salaries for our roughly 400 well-trained and skilled employees (which during peak season amount to almost 900).

We also face the challenge that during the low season there are very few passengers on the ferries, which means we operate at a loss for large parts of the year – and this is the reason why Trafikverket procures traffic to and from Gotland, because without the contract no one would run the ferries when there are no passengers.

In other words, it is important that we have profits so that we can continue to be the stable and reliable company that all our passengers and customers, and perhaps especially the people and businesses on Gotland, expect.
