Destination Gotland's ships make significant emission savings when we are berthed at the quay for more than an hour
Since 2019 we have been connected to the local power grid, which reduces emissions of several greenhouse gases and noise levels in port
While the ships are moored in port there are still many systems on board that must be running. Electricity is needed for all systems, both on the bridge and in the engine room. Electricity is also needed for heating, lighting and computers. At the same time our cooks need power in the galley to prepare and cook food or for dishwashing, cleaning and toilets. A ship the size of those operated by Destination Gotland typically uses as much electricity as 250 average homes, and therefore we do what we can to reduce energy consumption and use green electricity where needed
Reduced emissions when ships are connected in port
Since 2019 Destination Gotland's ships have been connected to the fixed power grid in Visby Harbour, avoiding the use of the ships' own generators. Once connected to the local power grid the ships are supplied with an electrical cable from the substation in the harbour to the ship's electrical system via transformers on board
The main benefit is that the ferry no longer has to produce electricity on board. Each year we save up to 7,000–10,000 tonnes of CO2 when all the ships are connected overnight
Renewable energy
Gotland's goal is to have a locally climate-neutral energy supply by 2025. This means investing in a high share of locally produced renewable energy and more bioenergy, wind power and solar energy. On Gotland the conditions for producing renewable energy are unusually favourable, for example for wind power and solar electricity
At present Gotland's energy production also comes from the mainland and reaches Gotland via two power cables. Currently the electricity supplied to Destination Gotland's ships mainly comes from mainland production
Shore power on the mainland
In 2021 Stockholm Ports will expand its shore power installation in Nynäshamn so that we can connect the ship that remains overnight during the high season. In the same way as in Visby this improves the local environment for residents and reduces emissions of nitrogen oxides, particles and carbon dioxide in the surrounding urban area
Everyone benefits from shore power
Destination Gotland has developed a roadmap to become climate-neutral by 2045 at the latest. Using the shore power grid in Visby Harbour and in Nynäshamn is part of the work to reduce emissions. The local environment improves, the air becomes cleaner and noise is also reduced because no engines need to be running. Being connected to the local power grid is a major societal benefit for all parties
