Welcome to Gotland - the island of great adventure and beautiful nature
Gotland is full of magnificent scenery, medieval churches and eateries with local specialties. Visby, the medieval Hanseatic town and UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a hub for Gotland’s visitors. Those interested in the arts can visit open studios and see outdoor performances in church ruins. Sports enthusiasts will find roads made for cycling or jogging, and there are plenty of spots for surfing, kayaking, golf or scuba diving around the island. But most of all, there are perfect places to simply enjoy your time; relax, enjoy a cup of coffee or take a walk beside the sea.
Travel by ferry with Destination Gotland
It’s easy to get to Gotland from the Swedish mainland by ferry, on either the north line from Nynäshamn (near Stockholm) or the south line from Oskarshamn. During the summer you can also travel from Västervik and return to the mainland the same day. The ferry takes around three hours to reach Visby Harbour, Gotland’s main hub.
The ferry is a convenient and affordable way to travel to Gotland. You can bring your car, motorhome or bike and relax on board in comfortable lounges or cabins. There are also restaurants and shops offering hot and cold food, drinks and souvenirs. Travelers with pets can choose between pet cabins and animal lounges, or you can leave your pets in your vehicle and visit them during the journey.
Once on Gotland, an island full of nature and culture awaits. All roads are free to drive on, and there are campsites, grocery shops and places to refuel dotted around the island. Wifi is widespread and you can pay by credit or debit card in most shops and restaurants. Gotland, like the rest of Sweden, believes in the ‘Freedom to Roam’, which you can read more about here.
