Active holidays

Gotland has so much to offer those who like to get active on holiday, as well as those who like to combine a little peace and quiet with fast-paced adventure.

Running free
Tie on your running shoes and let your legs take you on a journey. Enjoy the fresh sea air along beach paths or embark on an exciting trail run along the cliffs. The great thing about running is that you can choose your own level and Gotland has everything to offer, in magnificent surroundings. If you love the challenge of a contest, there are several competitions every year from short distance, to half-marathons, to cross-country races.

And Gotland’s pathways aren’t just for running, take to the trails on a mountain bike and feel the adrenaline rush as you speed along limestone cliffs and down through the trees to the beach.

Exploring on horseback
Since Gotland has its own breed of pony, it won’t surprise you to hear that there are plenty of opportunities to ride out around the island. It’s a real privilege to experience Gotland’s countryside on horseback, from galloping along sandy beaches to meandering through barren expanses inland that make you feel like you’re in the Wild West. The combination of the spectacular landscape and the movement of your horse gives a unique sense of peace and freedom.

Riding the waves
Water activities are close at hand wherever you are on the island. The strong winds of the open sea offer great opportunities for kitesurfing and windsurfing. Autumn storms also bring perfect breakers and rollers for wave surfing. If you don’t have your own equipment, or you want to try any kind of surfing for the first time, local companies run courses and provide all the equipment you need.
Another great way to get out on the sea and experience the cliff coastline from a new perspective is in a sea kayak. There’s even a small archipelago to the north east of the island that provides the perfect environment for kayaking, where you can paddle out to your own tiny island and enjoy a picnic in complete peace.

Breath-taking heights and free falling

Gotland’s high cliffs are a great place to go climbing, but please be careful - the limestone is porous and can fall apart easily. Local climb companies offer guidance on well-tested locations for an exhilarating and safe experience.
If you’re looking for the ultimate adrenaline rush, skydiving is for you. There is nothing quite like jumping out of a plane and free-falling 3,000 feet above Visby. After the initial rush, take in Gotland’s spectacular sights from the above as your parachute takes you safely to the ground – an amazing memory you’ll have with you for life.
